Book Podcasts

I was doing some research recently (naturally) and came across this column published in the Wall Street Journal from August 2012 on book podcasts. Cynthia Crossen, who used to write the “Dear Book Lover” column for the WSJ, collected some of the best book podcasts from around the web:

The Best Book Podcasts (August 13, 2012)

It’s a bit dated now, so I decided to check around and see how many of the programs referenced are still in production.

NPR’s Fresh Air — “Fresh Air with Terry Gross, the Peabody Award-winning weekday magazine of contemporary arts and issues, is one of public radio’s most popular programs.”

Bookworm Podcast — “A must for the serious reader, Bookworm showcases writers of fiction and poetry – the established, new or emerging – all interviewed with insight and precision by the show’s host and guiding spirit, Michael Silverblatt.”

B&N’s Meet The Writers — Exclusive audio and video interviews with bestselling authors.

iTunes Meet The Author — “iBooks and the Apple Store have teamed up to bring you an incredible mix of interesting authors talking about the biggest books.”

The Guardian Books Podcast — “Subscribe free to our weekly podcast, presented by editor of Guardian books Claire Armitstead, for author interviews, readings and discussions – plus a full recording of our monthly book club.”

The Agony Column —

Books on the Nightstand — “At Books on the Nightstand, we strive to bring you great book recommendations, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the world of books, bookstores and publishing. We do this through our weekly podcast and frequent blog posts.”

ABC Book Review Podcast — “Beth Hatch is the Virtual Services Manager for Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library. Cari Dubiel is the Computer Services Manager for Twinsburg Public Library. In our podcast archives, we talk about e-books, audiobooks, what we’re reading, personalities, relationships, and much more.”

Frequent readers of the CA Library Blog know we have featured other podcasts as part of our regular feature Podcast Friday! Here are some of the book-related podcasts we have been following over the years:

Inside The New York Times Book Review Podcast — “Each week, Pamela Paul, the editor of the Book Review, talks to authors, editors and critics about new books, the literary scene and current best sellers.”

NPR: Books Podcast — “NPR book reviews, news and author interviews — for people who love to read. The best of Morning Edition, All Things Considered and other award-winning NPR programs.”

Ink & Quill — “Ink and Quill is a podcast that discusses works of fiction from various authors. Your hosts Fizz and Dr. Hot-Fizz will delve into various plots, subtexts, and uses of language within the text as well as personal opinion about the author and their work.”
